The Northwoods Children’s Museum is broadening their appeal to older children through their new science
program targeted to 4th and 5th graders. “Our science program gets science out of the classroom books and into the hands of the kids,” said Rouleen Gartner, Executive Director. The “Science for Kids” program focuses on hands-on activities in various aspects of natural and physical science.
Each class highlights a different topic and children develop both independent and group skills with a variety of instructors. Topics include Earth’s Materials, Magnetic Behavior, Electric Energy, Aquatic Invasive Species, Learning from Plants, Animal Camp, Geocaching and Chemical Reactions. “Children gain a greater understanding of how science affects the world around them,” said
Gartner, “when they learn from people who are experts in their field who draw on real life experiences.” The classes are held every Tuesday after school from 3:45 – 5:00 p.m. at the museum beginning February 7 and running
through March 27. Students from Northland Pines Elementary School in Eagle River can take a bus directly from school to the museum. Class size is limited to ensure that more attention is paid to each student. Cost is just $40 per child and includes a snack and play time in the museum prior to class. Preregistration is required by calling the museum at 715.479.4623. “Where else can kids dissect an owl pellet, gold pan with a geologist and treasure hunt with a GPS
right in their backyard?” commented Gartner. (Picture enclosed. Caption: Margie Rychlock, NCM Program Coordinator, shows how much energy it takes to power various electronic devices) Nicolet to hold free business start-upworkshops throughout the Northwoods (Multiple)

Between six and eight million cats and dogs enter our nation’s shelter system each year. Shelters can’t save and support this huge number of accidental litters, strays and offspring of family pets. As a result, nearly 4 million are euthanized annually. Spaying and neutering is the only 100% proven way to reduce these numbers and save animals’ lives. It’s not too often the opportunity comes along to play the part of a rather eccentric gentleman whose imaginary friend just so happens to be a six-foot rabbit who has the power to stop time.
But that exact role, along with many others, will be up for grabs when the Nicolet Players hold auditions for the upcoming play Harvey at 7 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, March 6 and 7.
Ever since its 1944 Broadway debut, this beloved comedy has won numerous awards and delighted audiences of all ages with its story about Harvey, the six-foot imaginary rabbit friend of mild-mannered and unconventional Elwood P. Dowd. When Elwood introduces Harvey at a party, his society-obsessed sister Veta decides to commit her brother to a sanitarium so he won’t ruin her daughter’s chances to marry upward. But the doctors think Veta, who confesses to having seen Harvey, is bonkers and commit her instead. Amid all the laughs, this classic screwball comedy packages a big heart and more than a few enduring truths.
There are roles for six men and six women, ages 20 to 70; parts vary from a few pages to much of the play. Performances take place the first two weekends of May.
Auditions both nights will be held in the Nicolet College Theatre located in the Learning Resources Center on the Rhinelander campus.
As always, everyone is welcome. You do not need to be a student at Nicolet or have any previous experience in acting to be in the cast. No preparation for auditions is necessary, though it helps to have read the script. Scripts are available for a three-day checkout from the Nicolet library in the Learning Resources Center.
Potential cast members can get more information about the play and learn how auditions are run by contacting Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall at (715) 365-4476, or sending him an email at jnuttall(at)nicoletcollege(dot)edu.
